Taupo International Motorsport Park came alive yesterday as the Supercars hit the track for the first time. This momentous occasion represents a significant milestone for racing fans in New Zealand, as Taupo now joins the ranks of top destinations like Pukekohe and Hamilton.
Despite initial worries about possible rain, yesterday’s practice session went smoothly, providing drivers Matt Payne and Richie Stanaway with invaluable opportunities to adapt to the demanding track conditions. Payne’s performance earned him an impressive P2 spot, while Stanaway secured P19.
Reflecting on his performance, Matt Payne remarked, “P2 is not a bad way to start the weekend. I think we learned a bit in that session, including just how challenging grip levels are, due to a mix of old and new surface at the Taupo track.” Anticipating potential challenges, Payne added, “I think you might see some carnage tomorrow.”
Richie Stanaway also shared his thoughts, stating, “I didn’t have the best run during practice, but we have a lot of data to look at. We will debrief and come back stronger tomorrow.”
The day ahead promises a flurry of action: Race 7 qualifying begins at 10:20 am, followed by the Top 10 Shootout at 12pm, and the main race at 3:05 pm. Sunday’s schedule is equally exciting, with qualifying at 10:45 am, the Top 10 Shootout at 12:25 pm, and Race 8 at 3:05 pm in all NZST.
