SUNDAY WRAP: DARWIN TRIPLE CROWN

It was a mixed day for Penrite Racing as they took to Hidden Valley Raceway for the Sunday action which included two qualifying sessions and races.

Qualifying for Race 14 saw Matt qualify with strong pace in P11 just shy of the top 10. Dave lacked his expected pace and started Race 13 in P22.

Qualifying for Race 15 followed immediately after the previous qualifying session and again it was tough going for both cars with Dave finishing P19 and Matt P21.

In what was a difficult race day for our Penrite Racing Mustangs both Dave and Matt saw themselves involved in some spirited and tight racing however Dave found himself involved in incidents not of his making in Races 14 and 15 which heavily impacted both his races and saw penalties handed out to Percat and Fraser for the contact. Matt also found himself involved in incidents and endured a difficulty day which is part of the learning curve for a rookie which he will no doubt learn from.

“First time for me in Darwin, I certainly had more downs than ups this weekend. Really enjoyed being here in Darwin I think the city is awesome, the track is cool as it has good flow. I just didn’t quite get it right this weekend until maybe in the final race but I struggled and made some silly decisions. Just need to look over it and see what we can do better for the next one.”

“From car 26’s perspective I think we rolled out with a lot of high hopes. I think practice went pretty well.We had a bit of a drama in the first Qualifying and didn’t get to run again but we thought that the car was good overall. We rolled out today and our qualifying results weren’t very good; we ended up 19th and 22nd. We struggled getting the most out of the tyre for single lap pace but in the races we don’t seem to be too bad. The first race we were sitting in 9th and got turned around so if I had finished 10th that would have been a stellar result for everyone. The last race we started 19th and ended up 12th. I think the race pace is a lot better than our qualifying pace but qualifying is absolutely everything in this sport, so if you don’t qualify well, you wont be able to win the races. We are looking forward to the next one in Townsville which is also a hot round so we are keen for that.”

The next round will take place in NTI Townsville 500 at Reid Park street circuit on 7 – 9 July.
