A TOUGH OPENING DAY OF RACING FOR REYNOLDS AND HOLDSWORTH IN TOWNSVILLE

Penrite Racing drivers David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth rolled the dice on opposing strategies but couldn’t manage to come up trumps, on the opening day of racing at the Townsville 500, today.

A narrow miss on a top 10 shootout berth, radio dramas and less than ideal tyre life over a long distance were among the hurdles. Here’s what the drivers had to say after a gruelling 250km of racing in sunny North Queensland…

Car #26 Penrite Racing driver, David Reynolds, said: “Today was a trying day. I was gutted to just miss the shootout this morning by 0.04s, then we had dramas with my radio before the race which wasn’t ideal.”

“We gambled by starting on SuperSofts which got us off to a fast start and up the order, but once I bolted the hard tyres on, we just had no pace and I went backwards for the rest of the race.

“We’ll focus on making the shootout tomorrow and the try make the tyres live longer in the race.”

Car #10 Penrite Racing driver, Lee Holdsworth, said: “We lacked pace across both cars today. In the race we decided to run long and put the SuperSoft tyres on at the end of the race to make a run in the closing stages.”

“But we were banking on a safety car that never came so could only make so much ground back.

“Getting fastest lap of the race is a minor positive but our pace over a long distance is what we really need to work on. We’ll dig deep together as a team tonight and try finish this weekend on a high.”
