Podium Performance from Reynolds in Race 13 at Winton

Saturday, May 21

Pizza Hut Winton SuperSprint

Winton Raceway, Victoria

It was a case of fast, but frustrated for David Reynolds, as Penrite Racing pounced on yet another podium result in championship Race 13, at the Pizza Hut Winton SuperSprint today.

Taking home the fastest lap of the race and sitting atop the timesheets in the opening stages of Qualifying, Reynolds was left disappointed after not being able to replicate the same time and fall to a P7 grid spot.

Lee Holdsworth fared much better, removing the Qualifying monkey on his back with a solid P5.

The Penrite Mustangs negotiated their way through early part of the race to find themselves both in the top 5 before the pit stops began.

As the leaders Cameron Waters, Shane Van Gisbergen and Chaz Mostert pitted, Reynolds and Holdsworth stayed out in clear air to run P1 and P2 at the halfway stage of the race.

Going for the long strategy, both cars eventually pitted and rejoined with fresher tyres which began to pay off with 8 laps to go as Reynolds passed Mostert for the podium and began to charge down the leaders.

However, with three laps remaining Reynolds ran into fuel trouble and had to back off and cruise home. Holdsworth performed his own fight back from a slow pit stop to finish where he started, in P5.

Car #26 Penrite Racing driver, David Reynolds: “I’m pretty happy with P3 from where we started. Our strategy was to pit early but the car just got better as the race went on, so we stayed out and it worked perfectly.”

“I was fuel saving for the last 3 laps so I couldn’t get any closer to Waters and Van Gisbergen ahead and just brought it home for the team.

“I’ve got to qualify better tomorrow and not make so many mistakes. My car is an absolute jet. Let’s see what tomorrow brings, more trophies I hope.”

Championship position: P6 (up 2)

Car #10 Penrite Racing driver, Lee Holdsworth: “We were quick today and it’s a great result, but we had a cross threaded wheel nut in the pit stop which cost us a shot at a podium.”

“I fought my way back to a top 5 which isn’t too bad. We had a little bit of contact with Brodie Kostecki that hurt the steering. We’ve brought our momentum from the test day last week, so if we can keep it clean there’s a good result here for the taking.

“I want to back it up tomorrow and finish a few places higher.”

Championship position: P12 (up 3)
