Penrite Racing Preview: Lights Out for Perth SuperNight

After a last outing season best, it’s time to head west this weekend for the Bunnings Trade Perth SuperNight at Barbagallo Raceway.

The two-day event features a busy track schedule for Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth, who will be looking to continue their climb up the championship standings.

Grove Racing Super2 pilot Matt Payne will also be on track across the weekend.

Here’s how the weekend shapes up.

THE CIRCUIT

Barbagallo Raceway is a short 2.42km layout that creates close racing. The downhill run to the final corner following the back straight is one of the most popular passing spots on the Supercars calendar with its deep sand trap awaiting for anyone who goes in a little too hot.

RACE FORMAT

The two-day race meeting consists of 3 x 46 lap races, 1 on Saturday night under lights and 2 on Sunday afternoon.

Race 10 – Saturday 8.40pm AEST

Race 11 – Sunday 2.05pm AEST

Race 12 – Sunday 5.45pm AEST

PIT STOPS

Each race will require 1 compulsory pit stop for a minimum of 2 tyres.

WHERE TO WATCH

Every session will be Live on Foxtel and Kayo, with Highlights shown on Channel 7.

WEATHER

Mostly fine with temperatures around the mid 20’s on Saturday and Sunday. So nothing like the wild wild west we’ve all heard about.

THE DRIVERS SAY

David Reynolds: “I love racing in Perth, it’s a tricky little track to master and the grip levels with the surface always throws up plenty of question marks.

“With three sprint races I think the secret to putting together a solid weekend is going to be qualifying. I’ve been really happy with where our car is at after Tassie and the Grand Prix so we’re all focused as a team on keeping the momentum up.”

Lee Holdsworth: Since I was a kid in go-karts I’ve always enjoyed racing under lights. There are so many more challenges – the glare, finding new braking markers, plus a change of grip and balance. The Perth event is a great venue to hold a night event.

Generally, we see some great racing at Barbagallo because of alternating strategies. Before the surface change for 2019 it was one of the highest tyre degradation tracks on the calendar due to the harsh environment that surrounds the track. It will be interesting to see how much speed the track has lost over the past 2 years.
