Reynolds podium highlights a speedy sunday showing in Tasmania for Penrite Racing

A maiden 2022 podium for David Reynolds has capped off a strong Sunday showing for Penrite Racing at the NED Whiskey Tasmania SuperSprint at Symmons Plains today.

Bouncing back from being taken out in the Saturday race, Reynolds showed speed straight out of the box this morning to qualify in the top 6 for both sprint races at the tight Tasmanian circuit. A lightning start in Race 4, next to sparring partner Mark Winterbottom, set Reynolds up for the podium result, after holding off a hard charging Chaz Mostert in the closing stages.

The emotion was there for all to see from Team Owner Stephen Grove and Team Principal, David Cauchi, as the team celebrated on the pit wall after Race 4.

Car #10 Penrite Racing pilot Lee Holdsworth ensured both sides of the garage were smiling, charging from P17 into the top 10 to finish P9 in Race 4 and P12 in Race 5, securing a healthy bag of points for the team, showing his racing smarts and speed for the team in both cars.

Car #26 Penrite Racing driver, David Reynolds: “What a difference a day makes. I’m so happy we got the silverware with the podium in the first race. I’ve felt we’ve been making good moves in the background but haven’t been able to put it all together on the track, so this is a great reward for all the hard work by everyone in our team.”

“We know we had the speed this weekend which is promising. I got two awesome starts and then the guys made great strategy calls. I was charging home in the last race and just we just missed grabbing another podium.

“I feel like this is the first of more trophies hopefully this season for us.”

Car #10 Penrite Racing driver, Lee Holdsworth: “I felt a lot more confident with the car today then yesterday and it showed in Race 4 when I was able to climb through the field for another top 10 finish.”

“We’ve had our hurdles with putting qualifying performances together so far, but we got into the top 10 for Race 5 and I feel we’re going in the right direction with the car. It was great for the team that Dave got a podium earlier today. I’m looking forward to getting on track at the Grand Prix next up.”

The speed turnaround by Penrite Racing was vindicated with both cars starting inside the Top 10 for this afternoon’s Race 5, with both Reynolds and Holdsworth held their ground in the opening laps.

Holdsworth pitted on Lap 11 but hit drama with an unsafe release leading to a 5 second post-race time penalty from the stewards. Duking it out on track with James Courtney and Brodie Kostecki on track, Holdsworth fought hard to maintain position.

Meanwhile the car #26 crew of Reynolds chose to run long with leader Van Gisbergen. Reynolds pitted from the lead on Lap 27 for fresh tyres to rejoin P5, from here Reynolds went on a charge as the fastest car on the track to chase the leading pack and pass Todd Hazelwood for P4.

Unfortunately, he ran out of laps to claim back-to back podium results but brought car #26 in a healthy P4, 1 second behind Anton De Pasquale in P3. Holdsworth battled hard to bring car #10 come home P12.

A cracking start by Reynolds saw him jump yesterday’s sparring partner Mark Winterbottom off the second row of the grid and straight into a podium spot on Lap 1.

Any early progress put on hold with a red flag on the opening lap delayed the race intermittently. When underway again on Lap 6 Reynolds kept a watching brief on the Triple 8 duo of Broc Feeney and Shane Van Gisbergen ahead, before pitting on Lap 17. Penrite Racing played the strategy game nicely for both cars to hold Reynolds in P3 while Holdsworth charged his way into the Top 10.

Reynolds was able to hold off a hard charging Chaz Mostert in the closing laps to score Penrite Racings maiden podium for season 2022, coming home behind Van GIsbergen and Feeney.

Holdsworth put in another smart drive to avoid the renowned Lap 1 chaos to charge from P17 to P9 recording back-to-back Top 10 finishes in Tasmania.
